This Fender Custom Shop Masterbuilt 56 Stratocaster Relic by Greg Fessler in Daphne Blue weighs in at 7 lbs 2 oz. This Heavy Relic features hand-wound pickups, a lightweight Swamp Ash body, and a Quartersawn Maple Neck. Greg Fessler has been making us nothing but stellar relics! This 56 Strat is taunting me, begging me to go plug it in... Must... resist...the urge!
Finished in Daphne Blue and then Heavily Relic'd, this Strat appears more traveled than most. With all the classic, tell-tale signs of being someone's #1, this Strat has a strong allure thanks to a very thoughtfully executed aging job. The fingerboard also shows heavy wear on its nitrocellulose finish, creating a uniform look. The patina, or darkening of the Daphne Blue finish, increases the contrast of the maple neck and 1 ply white pickguard. Holding this guitar is a unique experience!
The body is made from 2 pieces of light-weight Swamp Ash which helps the guitar to weigh in at a mere 7 lbs 2 oz! Strats this light are pretty rare these days as the lightweight Swamp Ash supply ain't what it used to be! Many folks have spent years trying to find a sub 7 lb Strat and, as many know by now, Swamp Ash will not be used as heavily by Fender moving forward in an attempt to help the tonewood recover. The guitar was finished in Daphne Blue and then heavily distressed by Greg Fessler. This guitar oozes mojo, from the arm wear to the darkened checking, the tactile quality of the wear above the pickguard... every aspect of this guitar is tasty!
The neck is made from a 5/4 piece of quarter-sawn maple. When you cut wood at this angle, it is more stable than if it were flat sawn. The neck is shaped to a 10/56 V Profile. This much-loved neck shape starts with a V at the nut which morphs into a C/U around the 7th to 9th frets. The fingerboard radius is a 9.5" and there are 21, 6105 fret installed. This is a very playable neck with expertly rolled fingerboard edges and smooth as can be fret ends. Classic 1.650" nut width and 25.5" scale length combine for a familiar feel.
The electronics include a set of hand-wound, 1956 Stratocaster Spec Single Coil pickups with a Reverse Wound/Reverse Polarity middle pickup for noise-free operation in positions 2 and 4. These pickups display an ability to interact with subtle changes in the Volume and Tone controls in an exceptionally musical way. With greater dynamic range comes greater expression and this Strat excels at providing both!
