Used Fender Custom Shop David Gilmour Stratocaster Relic in Black over 3 Tone R90183

Regular price $12,500.00 $11,500.00 Sale

This Used Fender Custom Shop David Gilmour Stratocaster Relic is in on trade and it is in great shape. The neck is straight, the frets are still crowned, and the truss rod is functioning properly. Included with the guitar are the certificate of authenticity and the original hardshell case. The Gilmour Relic exposes the color over color scheme the guitar is finished with. Underneath the black finish, a Three Tone Sunburst exists. It is exposed in a couple of areas and should you continue to play it, you likely expose more of it.

David Gilmour and the Fender Custom Shop are extremely proud to release one of the most highly anticipated guitars ever - the fender Custom Shop David Gilmour Stratocaster Relic in Black. Gilmour’s famous “Black Strat®” guitar was a cornerstone of the Pink Floyd sound; featured extensively on The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall, and his critically acclaimed 2006 solo effort, On an Island.

The Fender Custom Shop worked closely with Gilmour and his longtime guitar technician, Phil Taylor, to create his signature model, a reproduction of the Black Strat complete with its unmistakable look, sound, and feel. Featuring a black nitrocellulose lacquer finish over a 3 tone sunburst, alder body with black pickguard, one-piece maple neck, custom pickups, and Gilmour’s own distinctive electronics and shortened vintage tremolo arm, the David Gilmour Signature Series Stratocaster is as beautiful, powerful, and individual as Gilmour’s playing. Additionally, the guitar comes with a custom case, Evidence Audio™ high-end guitar cable, and Gilmour’s three-disc Live in Gdansk CD/DVD package. When initially introduced, the guitar came with a copy of Taylor’s book, The Black Strat, however, the book was excluded from the package at some point over the last couple of years. We confirmed this with the Custom Shop when we noticed the book was not included with a previous one.

The body of the Gilmour is made from Alder, the Vanilla of tonewoods, which really is the perfect choice for the Stratocaster. Should you ever play this guitar enough to wear through the nitro topcoat and black finish, you'll begin to see a 3 Tone Sunburst underneath. This Color over Color technique was born back in the day when orders came through for certain colors. Fender would just take an already finished guitar and spray right over the original! The Gilmour Strat celebrates this quirk in all its glory! It also has a 50s Style 1 ply Black pickguard meshed with white pickup covers and knobs. For many (including the guy doing this write-up!), this is easily the coolest-looking Strat ever made!

The neck is made from 1 piece of Maple and shaped to a 1983 Thin Shouldered C Shape Neck Profile. This is a thin neck in all positions and, despite referencing an 80s profile, feels VERY vintage. This is also thanks in part to a 7.25" fingerboard radius and the Vintage Sized Frets. The nut width measures 1.675, slightly wider than VIntage Spec. 25.5" scale length keeps the strings feeling taut and is Classic Fender.

The pickups on the Gilmour offer interesting variety. The Bridge Pickup is the Seymour Duncan SSL-5 Custom Staggered Strat Bridge Pickup. The middle pickup is called a Custom Wound Middle Stratocaster Pickup from the Custom Shop. They don't cough up any additional info about it but know this: if you are looking to sound like Gilmour, well let's just say it ain't the guitar's fault if/when you don't! The neck Pickup is a Custom Shop Fat 50s, a favorite of ours that we have never heard sound bad. A mini-toggle switch allows you to add the neck pickup to selector switch positions one, two, and three. A master volume, 2 tone controls, and a 5-way pickup selector switch found out the electronic details.

If you ever wanted to own one of the New Old Stock David Gilmour Stratocaster, this is probably your last chance! No pressure, of course, but who knows how many other dealers decided to stash one away and if/when they’ll decide to part with it! If you are interested, give us a call and do it fast! There is only one of these available and once it's gone we cannot get another one!
