After receiving his degrees, Irwin directed and taught the music programs for a small town in western Illinois.  His broad range of responsibilities included directing the bands, orchestras, choirs, teaching privately and general music classes.

After teaching in public school systems, Irwin went to work at Karnes Music Company in Des Plaines, Illinois as a guitar and piano instructor.
