The Artisan series from the Fender Custom Shop truly lives up to it’s name. These instruments are functioning works of art. This guitar is a Thinline Stratocaster, a freshly implemented design that is making a surge this year with the release of the Eric Johnson Thinline Strat. Well this guitar is on a completely other level. With it’s solid figured Koa Top teamed up with a Roasted 4A Okoume Back, this instrument rings like a bell. I find Okoume to be most similar to Mahogany in terms of tone.
The neck is made from a 3A piece of figured Birdseye Maple then roasted to a Medium tint giving it a rich look. The dark look of the neck is complimented further by the African Blackwood fingerboard, an expensive and rare tone wood appreciated for it’s look and tonal properties. The fingerboard is carved to a compound radius of 9.5” - 12” making it highly playable in all positions, and then topped with 6105 frets. The pickups are a set of 63 Handwound from Josephina. These pickups are warm and rich sounding but with a musical top end, chimey and sweet. It’s not the quackiest Strat, however it is huge sounding! The guitar weighs in at a manageable 7 lbs 8 oz. Okoume tends to be denser and heavier than ash or alder so it’s perfect for a semi hollow design.
