The Gibson Custom 1957 Les Paul Gold Top Dark Back in Double Gold celebrates the year Gibson introduced their Humbucker. This Fat Neck'ed rock 'n roll machine has withstood the test of time, becoming a venerable powerhouse in the world of the Les Paul. The 2020 reissue is a fine representation of the guitar it is based on, honoring it with only the finest appointments and considerable detail. Speaking of details...
Set-Neck Construction gets the ball rolling. The body and neck are glued together using Hide Glue, an adhesive that needs to be heated up and worked with quickly in order for it to work. This glue takes an expert, and Gibson has them! One feature the early Les Paul's are revered for is their Long Neck Tenon. This unseen little detail adds some crucial stability under the neck position humbucker. The long neck tenon certainly helps aid in sustain and tuning stability, especially as the night wears on and you begin to apply, maybe a little more pressure with your fretting hand than necessary.
The neck is made from solid Mahogany a tonewood that is becoming more rare and expensive but the day. The neck profile is an authentic feeling Chunky C shape, just like you would find on a REAL 1957 LP Standard. An Indian rosewood Fingerboard carries a 12" fingerboard radius for a flat and fast feel from the nut to the butt. 22 Historic Gibson Narrow/Tall Frets come installed and are smooth a glass after a trip through the Plek Machine at Gibson. The fingerboard inlays are made from aged cellulose Nitrate in their timeless Trapezoid Design. Classic Gibson Nut Width of 1.69" puts the strings right under your fingers while 24.75" scale length keeps the strings feeling slinky.
The body is made from 1 piece of lightweight Mahogany. This wood is getting hard to come by and more expensive by the day, especially pieces this big! If you'd like to learn more about this magnificent tonewood, click here! It is topped with a carved piece of plain maple. The body is not routed out or chambered for weight at all, so you are getting the best wood that Gibson can get their hands on. The guitar is finished in Nitro Cellulose Lacquer and treated with Gibson's VOS Finish for a lightly aged look. The Double Gold Finish is exquisite and it is set off beautifully by the Dark Bark (as opposed to the lighter shade back found on most Gold Tops).
The electronics consist of a pair of Custombucker Humbuckers loaded with Alnico III Magnets. These pickups have a warm, singing quality to them without being nasally or overly compressed. These humbuckers sound beautiful when played clean, as well. The 500k CTS Pots and Paper and Oil Capacitors keep things authentic, functional, and high quality. Dialing in musical tones has never been easier thanks to such magnificent electronic components!
The 1957 Les Paul Standard Reissue known as the Gold Top is still a contender, 63 years after its introduction. This specific guitar celebrates the earliest Les Paul to get a pair of humbuckers and it does so in a highly-detailed fashion. Stop by or give us a call to learn more about this Gold Beauty! As you can probably tell from this lengthy description, we kind of have a place in our hearts for this model!
