1958 marked a game changing year for Gibson. Going from the Goldtop's of the previous years, 58 marked the first year for transparent tops and the birth of the Gibson Sunburst. While the 59 tends to be the more iconic when it comes to the conversation, the 58 is where the Les Paul as we know it today took shape.
This 58 Les Paul Standard Reissue comes with a beautifully figured maple top. Which basically means you get a 59 looking Les Paul for the cost of a 58! The flames are uniform and tight, much more so than the last three 59's we have seen. The Washed Cherry Sunburst looks amazing especially with the Gibson VOS treatment giving this beauty a slightly aged or hazy look.
A pair of Custombuckers are factory installed. These pickups are un-potted and are made with Alnico 3 magnets. These pickups sound amazing! Whether you are playing clean or dirty, you'll be amazed at how great this beauty sounds no matter what you are plugged in to. Classic Gibson controls include independent volume and tone controls along with a 3 way toggle switch.
The neck is a Chunky C Shape that feels full to the hand. It's not cumbersome or overwhelmingly large by any means but it is no where close to that 60's slim taper many have loved over the years. The Mahogany Neck is topped with an Indian Rosewood fingerboard that sports a 12" radius and 22 narrow tall frets.
Gibson is back in 2019 with new leadership and the quality if already heading in the right direction! The first handful of guitars we have seen have had many of the issues addressed. Better cut nuts, even smoother frets, improved finish work, the improvements are quite obvious!
