The difference is that Martin has opened up the design for the modern player. The cutaway gets your fretting hand comfortably into the upper register, while the contemporary neck and appointments make this feel more like a purpose-built performance instrument than a traditional guitar wearing a pickup.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe tonewood combination is particularly interesting. The \u003cstrong\u003esolid spruce top\u003c\/strong\u003e gives the guitar clarity, projection, and plenty of headroom when you dig in, while the koa fine veneer back and sides add a visually striking look and a balanced tonal character. Martin describes the combination as delivering shimmering highs and long, even sustain, and that's a pretty good way to think about the personality of this guitar. There are 20 Plek'd frets, and the neck joins the body at the 14th fret.
