This Used Kurt Wilson Prototype Standard Bolt Electric Guitar in Walnut Burst is here on consignment. Built in the early 1990s, this one-of-a-kind guitar served as a Prototype for what became the Standard Model from Kurt Wilson. The pickups are no longer original and the knobs have been swapped out, so it is no longer in 100% original condition. Since this guitar is a prototype, it does not have a serial number but since Mr. Wilson is a friend of the shop, we called him, sent him pics of this guitar and he was happy to give us the scoop, or rather what he could remember since it was going on 30 years since building it! Included with the guitar is a Gator Gig Bag.
Overall, it is in good condition though it is going on 30 years old and has been played. The body is free from any severe wear and tear. There are some impressions on the back, a little rashing but nothing serious. There are a couple of dings on the body as well but again, nothing severe. I noticed a ding on the bass side of the fingerboard, close to where the neck and the body meet. You'll literally never feel it in any actual playing position but... you can't unsee things so I'm bringing it up!
The body is made from 2 Pieces of Maple, that, beneath the stain, are quite beautiful! it's not figured or anything but the grain patterns are still interesting. It's then finished in Walnut burst. The control panel cover is also Maple and matches the finish. A super cool custom touch that Kurt Wilson carries on today.
Though the pickups aren't original they all sound really good. Each pickup has its own on/off switch, that's what the 3 Black Mini Switches do. So you can mix and match the onboard pickups to your taste. A Master Vole and Master Tone Control cover the remaining electronics.
The neck is made from 3 pieces of maple, then has a crazy figured and birdseye maple fingerboard, along with a flame maple headstock veneer. A set of Gold Gotoh Made in Japan Tuners still hold a tune just fine. The Kurt Wilson Signature on the headstock is in silver paint pen, an obvious sign this is an early guitar of his!
The neck profile feels like a Full C shape to my hands. It measures in with .845" at the 1st fret and .940" at the 12th fret. Nut width measures in at 1.675". There is a volute on the back of the headstock as well. The frets are a medium-jumbo size, with decent width but they aren't super tall.
The bridge is a Hardtail Style, 6 Saddle, through-body design. Like a Tele, these strings go through the back of the body making this a lively and resonant guitar acoustically.
Nobody treats used guitars as we do at The Music Gallery! Every trade-in goes through an inspection, cleaning, restring and set up before being put out on sale. We even put guitars with bad frets through our Plek machine if need be. If this service piques your interest learn more here or give us a call!
