There are plenty of great electric guitars in the world, but the 1959 Les Paul Standard occupies a pretty special place in guitar history. The combination of a carved maple top, mahogany body, powerful humbuckers, and an incredibly responsive neck has made the ’59 Standard the benchmark by which virtually every other solidbody electric guitar is measured. This Limited Edition 1959 Les Paul Standard Reissue takes that legendary formula and adds the kind of attention to detail you expect from the Gibson Custom Shop.
The first thing you'll notice is that gorgeous Faded Peach Burst over a hand-selected AAA figured maple top. The figuring on these guitars is chosen for its individual character, so every one has its own personality. Underneath that beautiful top is a lightweight, one-piece solid mahogany body with no weight relief. That's exactly the kind of construction you want in a ’59 reissue, giving the guitar the resonance, sustain, and dynamic response that have made the original guitars so revered.
Then there's the aging. This is a Heavy Aged instrument, with the finish work handled by the Murphy Lab. The lacquer checking, softened edges, and worn areas give the guitar the feel of an instrument that has spent decades being played rather than something that just rolled out of a factory yesterday. More importantly, the aging is beautifully integrated into the guitar rather than simply looking like somebody attacked a new Les Paul with a belt buckle.
The mahogany neck features Gibson's Authentic 1959 profile and a long neck tenon, giving you that substantial, unmistakably vintage-inspired feel along with a solid neck-to-body connection. The rosewood fingerboard has a 12" radius, reissue medium jumbo frets, single-ply binding, and classic cellulose trapezoid inlays. A period-correct nylon nut completes the vintage-style setup.
Under the hood, Gibson has gone with a pair of Custombucker Alnico 4 pickups with Double Classic White bobbins and aged nickel covers. Alnico 4 is a particularly nice choice here, giving these pickups a wonderfully balanced vintage voice with plenty of harmonic complexity, sweetness, and dynamic response. They have that familiar late-’50s PAF character where the guitar seems to respond to how you play as much as to what you're playing.
Roll the volume back and they clean up beautifully. Dig in and they become muscular and vocal, with plenty of sustain and harmonic bloom. With two volume controls, two tone controls, and a three-way toggle, you've got the full range of classic Les Paul tones at your fingertips.
The hardware follows the same philosophy. An ABR-1 Tune-O-Matic bridge and Stop Bar tailpiece are finished in aged nickel, while Kluson Deluxe tuners, cream plastics, and gold Top Hat knobs complete the period-inspired look. Everything works together to make this feel less like a modern recreation and more like a beautifully preserved piece of Gibson's Golden Era.
This is a Limited Edition Gibson Custom instrument, produced in a small-batch run and built with the kind of attention to detail that has made the Custom Shop's most historically accurate Les Pauls so desirable.
It includes the original Lifton reissue hardshell case and Certificate of Authenticity.
If you've ever wondered what makes a great ’59 Les Paul so special, this guitar gives you a pretty compelling answer. The lightweight one-piece mahogany body, spectacular figured maple top, Authentic 1959 neck, Custombucker Alnico 4 pickups, and beautifully executed Heavy Aged finish all come together in one seriously impressive Les Paul.
