Zoey Witz | Teachers at The Music Gallery of Highland Park
Zoey's abilities on the guitar are anything but typical. No genre is too difficult and nothing is too fast. Even experienced players are stunned by his musicality and flat out impressive technique. Zoey began playing guitar in 1987 and studied with Fareed Haque, an absolute legend and virtuoso. He furthered his musical education at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb and at Harper College as well.
Zoey began performing professionally in 1997 and started teaching private music lessons in 2001. Zoey is currently a freelance player in Chicago, though has played all throughout the Country (as well as in Canada and Mexico) with various bands and orchestras, playing jazz, blues, rock, country, bluegrass, pop, and r&b in concert halls, theaters, clubs, festivals, fundraisers, and private events. Opening for stars like Travis Tritt, Estelle, Scott Henderson/Jeff Berlin/Dennis Chambers, and Bernie Worrell, Zoey has a wealth of experience as a professional musician.
Zoey has played with numerous acts like Maggie Speaks, Bad Sneakers Orchestra (Steely Dan tribute), Cathy Richardson, Gerald McClendon, General Zod, Stephanie Rogers Band, Nigel Mack, CJ Chenier, Nicholas Barron, and many others through the years. He has been in the studio with World Class Noise, Laury Shelly, Nicholas Barron, Derrick Procell, Social Act Band and many others. He has also done commercial studio work for video games soundtracks.
Zoey has taught thousands of lessons over the last 25+ years. From true beginners all the way through advanced players, Zoey can certainly help you achieve your goals. Many of his students have gone on to be performers as well! He is excited to rejoin the Music Gallery Teaching Staff and we are certainly excited to have him back!
In his own words...
"I specialize in rock, blues, jazz, country, bluegrass, pop, r&b styles as a player and teacher. I have taught a wide range of students from complete beginners to coaching some professionals. I emphasize theory, repertoire (learning songs), and styles, although I tailor lessons to the students’ individual needs. I am known for being patient and non-judgmental as well, and I often include light psychological coaching as well as physical coaching (playing music can be a psychologically taxing endeavor). I have devised efficient physical approaches to learning the guitar in a thorough, relaxed, easy paced, non-intimidating manner that gets real results. I bring a unique perspective to guitar lessons in that I am a professional performer as well, in a wide variety of styles, which lends itself to versatility as a teacher as well."
