The current HD-28 also benefits from Martin's forward-shifted Golden Era scalloped X-bracing, a design choice that puts more of the bracing away from the soundhole and allows the spruce top to respond more freely. The solid spruce top and solid East Indian rosewood back and sides are the other half of the equation, giving you a tonal palette that can be warm and woody when played gently but absolutely explode when you lean into it.
The neck is one area where Martin has made a noticeable modern improvement. The Golden Era Modified Low Oval profile combines a comfortably shaped neck with Martin's High-Performance Taper, a 1 3/4" nut, and a full 25.4" scale length. The ebony fingerboard carries those instantly recognizable long Diamonds & Squares abalone inlays, while the 20 Plek'd frets give the guitar a very precise playing surface. The neck joins the body at the 14th fret, and the combination of the GE profile and HPT makes this current HD-28 feel considerably more refined than the old-school “big acoustic neck” stereotype might suggest.
And then there's the part everybody recognizes from across the room: bold herringbone. The herringbone top trim, antique white binding, Style 28 multi-stripe rosette, faux tortoise pickguard, ebony bridge, and nickel open-gear tuners with butterbean buttons give the HD-28 its unmistakable visual identity. The top receives Martin's Aging Toner beneath the gloss finish, adding a subtle warmth to the spruce that complements the vintage-inspired appointments. Flip it over and you'll find the classic zig-zag back purfling that has long been associated with Style 28. It's one of those guitars where every appointment seems to say, “Yep. That's an HD-28.”
The current Standard Series HD-28 is also Plek'd, and that's a detail we think is worth mentioning. Martin's Plek process gives the fretwork a level of precision that helps this guitar feel as good as it sounds. Combine that with the updated neck profile, refined Golden Era Modern Belly bridge, bone nut and compensated bone saddle, and you've got a guitar that retains the traditional HD-28 character while benefiting from the sort of modern setup and construction refinements players appreciate every time they pick it up.
