The Martin 000-12E Retro is a great example of how to make a guitar feel vintage without making it feel old-fashioned. The Aging Toner on the spruce top, full gloss finish, black binding, multi-stripe top inlay, Old Style 18 Boltaron rosette, faux tortoise pickguard, and nickel open-gear tuners with butterbean buttons give the guitar a wonderfully understated vintage vibe. Those appointments aren't there simply for decoration — they give the 000-12E Retro the look of a much more traditionally styled Martin while keeping the construction and playability firmly in the present.
And, of course, this is an acoustic-electric, with Martin's E1 electronics system and built-in chromatic tuner. It's a straightforward setup that gives you the essentials when you need to plug in without turning the guitar into a complicated piece of stage equipment. The 000 body is already an excellent size for performing, and the onboard electronics make the transition from acoustic playing to amplified playing painless.
The 000-12E Retro is a really appealing choice for someone who wants traditional Martin personality but doesn't necessarily need — or want — a Dreadnought. It's comfortable, balanced, beautifully appointed, and built from solid tonewoods. The full gloss finish and vintage details give it plenty of character, while the modern neck, Plek'd fretwork, and E1 electronics keep it practical. In other words, it looks back without getting stuck there.
