Originally built during what many consider the golden era of C. F. Martin & Co., this D-18 has benefited from a professional refinish completed several years ago. The work was tastefully done, and the guitar now displays light lacquer checking throughout—an elegant, vintage-correct touch that complements its classic character. At one point in its life, the instrument wore an oversized custom pickguard. Prior to refinishing, that guard was carefully removed and the mounting holes were properly plugged, preserving both structural integrity and visual appeal (please see photos for close-ups). As you would expect from a well-loved instrument of this age, there are a few minor dings, dents, and scuffs, but overall it presents beautifully and remains in very nice cosmetic condition.
Structurally, this D-18 is in excellent playing shape. It features a very healthy neck angle and a stable bridge set at the correct height, with ample saddle remaining for future adjustment if ever needed. The guitar has received a professional refret, and the frets show no visible wear—ready for decades of continued enjoyment. Any age-related binding concerns were properly addressed during the refinishing process, ensuring both stability and longevity.
It includes a newer, era-correct green-lined hardshell case that pairs perfectly with the instrument’s vintage vibe.
Most importantly, the tone. This is the kind of sound that only time can create—open, woody, and authoritative, with big, booming, cannon-like projection from this classic dreadnought body. While it is not 100% original due to thoughtful modifications and restorative work, it captures everything players seek in a vintage Martin: the feel, the response, the aroma of aged wood, and that unmistakable, seasoned voice.
A wonderfully restored 1953 D-18 that’s ready to be played, cherished, and passed down for years to come.
