This Fender Custom Shop 50s Telecaster Relic combines a beautifully resonant one-piece Swamp Ash body with a classic-feeling Fender neck and a set of Twisted Tele pickups that give this Telecaster a little more versatility than a traditional vintage-spec instrument. Finished in Sunset Orange Transparent and weighing just 7 lbs. 4 oz., this is an exceptionally lively Telecaster with plenty of acoustic resonance and character.
This guitar is really resonant even unplugged. You can feel the body and neck vibrating together as you play, and some of the most impressive tonal characteristics show up in the harmonics and overtones generated around the area behind the nut. The lightweight one-piece Swamp Ash body undoubtedly contributes to the guitar's lively response and keeps the total weight down to an excellent 7 lbs. 4 oz. With Swamp Ash becoming increasingly limited in supply, Fender Custom Shop's use of this lightweight wood has become more selective, making guitars like this increasingly special.
While we love the Nocaster pickup set, the Twisted Tele pickups are a fantastic modern complement to the one-piece Ash body. The bridge pickup delivers the familiar vintage Telecaster combination of twang, bite, and midrange cut, while the neck pickup is based on a Stratocaster neck pickup and offers more top-end presence and output than a traditional Tele neck pickup. The result is a neck pickup that's particularly well suited to lead playing while still retaining plenty of Telecaster character. A master volume, master tone, and three-way blade switch provide access to all the classic Tele sounds.
The quartersawn maple neck is carved to a Super Soft V profile, a shape that's slightly slimmer than the average 10/56 profile. The V is exceptionally subtle—so soft that some players may barely notice it—and the result is an extremely comfortable neck that's easy to play and control. A 9.5" fingerboard radius and 6105 frets provide a modern playing feel while retaining the character you'd expect from a vintage-inspired Fender Custom Shop instrument. The 25.5" scale length and 1.650" nut width complete the classic Fender feel.
A vintage Telecaster bridge with compensated brass saddles provides the traditional look while improving intonation compared with the straight-barrel saddles found on many vintage-style Telecasters.
