The Martin DC-13E Modern is a pretty terrific meeting point between the traditional Martin Dreadnought and the way modern players actually use an acoustic guitar. You get the big, familiar voice and projection of a D-14 Fret body, but with a comfortable cutaway, modern neck, easy upper-fret access, and stage-ready electronics. The recipe starts with a solid spruce top and koa fine veneer back and sides, then adds scalloped X-bracing, an ebony fingerboard, Martin's Performing Artist neck with High-Performance Taper, and Martin E1 electronics with a built-in tuner. This is a brand-new 2026 Road Series model, and a softshell case is included.
There is a reason the Dreadnought has remained such a huge part of the Martin story: when you want an acoustic guitar to sound big, a Dreadnought is a pretty tough place to start. The DC-13E Modern gives you that familiar Dreadnought footprint and 25.4" scale length, so it still feels and responds like a full-size acoustic. The difference is that Martin has opened up the design for the modern player. The cutaway gets your fretting hand comfortably into the upper register, while the contemporary neck and appointments make this feel more like a purpose-built performance instrument than a traditional guitar wearing a pickup.
The tonewood combination is particularly interesting. The solid spruce top gives the guitar clarity, projection, and plenty of headroom when you dig in, while the koa fine veneer back and sides add a visually striking look and a balanced tonal character. Martin describes the combination as delivering shimmering highs and long, even sustain, and that's a pretty good way to think about the personality of this guitar. Underneath it all is scalloped 5/16" spruce X-bracing, helping the top respond freely and giving the Dreadnought body plenty of room to do what Dreadnoughts do best.
The neck is very much aimed at today's player. Martin's Performing Artist Profile with High-Performance Taper gives you a comfortable, streamlined feel without abandoning the full 1 3/4" nut width that many acoustic players prefer. The 25.4" scale gives you the familiar Martin scale length, while the ebony fingerboard carries long Diamonds & Squares faux-mother-of-pearl inlays. There are 20 Plek'd frets, and the neck joins the body at the 14th fret. It's a combination that feels immediately familiar if you've spent time with modern Martin acoustics, but noticeably more player-focused than some of the company's traditional neck designs.
Visually, the DC-13E Modern is where the “13” designation starts to make sense. You've got a gloss natural spruce top, gloss natural-stained koa fine veneer back and sides, white binding, a faux tortoise pickguard, a single-ring faux-abalone rosette, and those long Diamonds & Squares fingerboard inlays. The Ratio nickel open-gear tuners with skeletonized butterbean buttons are a particularly nice touch. It has plenty of Martin DNA, but it doesn't look like somebody pulled a vintage guitar out of the archives and tried to make it stage-ready. This one was designed to look contemporary from the beginning.
And, of course, this is an acoustic-electric. Martin equips the DC-13E Modern with its E1 electronics system, giving you onboard amplification and a built-in chromatic tuner. For a guitar with this much acoustic horsepower, that's an important part of the package. The cutaway gives you access to the upper frets, the Dreadnought body gives you plenty of acoustic volume, and the E1 system makes the transition from couch to stage refreshingly simple.
If you want a Martin that still gives you that big, familiar Dreadnought experience but doesn't make you play by 1950s rules, the DC-13E Modern is a really compelling choice. It's comfortable, powerful, easy to amplify, and built around the way a lot of players actually play today. Traditional Martin foundation, modern player-friendly execution — that's the whole idea, and Martin nailed the brief here.
