PRS has always been pretty good at taking familiar guitar concepts and putting its own spin on them, and the SE NF3 is a great example. At first glance, you might think “S-style guitar,” but spend a little time with one, and you'll realize this is definitely its own animal.
The big story here is the pickup configuration. The NF3 is loaded with three PRS Narrowfield DD “S” humbuckers, giving you the familiar layout and versatility of a three-pickup guitar while bringing a completely different voice to the table. PRS designed these Narrowfield pickups to deliver the liveliness and immediacy of a great single-coil while retaining the thicker, more focused character of a humbucker — and, importantly, without the hum. The “Deep Dish” design uses taller bobbins and additional metal components between the magnets for a powerful, focused sound with plenty of clarity.
That makes the NF3 a seriously versatile guitar. The 5-way blade switch gives you five distinct pickup combinations, while the simple Volume and Tone controls keep things straightforward. It's equally comfortable covering rock, blues, country, gospel, pop, and jazz, and there's enough tonal range here to make this a legitimate grab-and-go workhorse.
The Poplar body keeps the guitar light and balanced, while the bolt-on Maple neck adds plenty of snap and articulation. The Wide Thin neck profile and 10" radius Rosewood fingerboard make the NF3 particularly comfortable for players who like a fast, modern feel without going to an extreme shred-oriented neck. With 22 frets and a 25" scale length, it occupies that sweet spot PRS has used so successfully for decades.
The familiar PRS touches are all here, too. Birds in the fingerboard, the clean PRS headstock design, and a PRS-patented tremolo give the NF3 plenty of PRS identity. The tremolo is particularly useful for players who like to add a little movement to chords and notes without turning the guitar into a dedicated dive-bomb machine.
And then there's the Ice Blue Metallic finish. It's distinctive without being obnoxious, giving this NF3 a modern look that works particularly well with the Rosewood fingerboard.
The SE NF3 is one of those guitars that makes a lot of sense once you actually play it. It's familiar enough to feel immediately comfortable, but different enough to keep things interesting. The three Narrowfield pickups are the real wildcard, giving you a broad tonal palette in a guitar that's simple, comfortable, and built to be played.
If you're looking for a versatile PRS that can cover a lot of ground without sounding like every other three-pickup guitar out there, the SE NF3 deserves a serious look.
