The PRS SE Paul's Guitar is one of those instruments where the more you play it, the more the design starts to make sense. This isn't simply another pretty PRS with a couple of humbuckers thrown in—it was built around Paul Reed Smith's own ideas about versatility, feel, and tone, and the result is one seriously useful electric guitar. The new Teal Black finish looks fantastic over the figured maple, but the real attraction is what happens when you plug it in. With TCI “S” pickups and independent coil-tap switches for each pickup, you've got an astonishing range of sounds available without having to navigate a dozen knobs and switches.

Paul's Guitar has always been a bit of a laboratory for PRS. The Core version incorporates some of Paul's favorite discoveries in guitar design, and the SE version brings a surprising amount of that thinking down into a much more accessible instrument. PRS describes it as one of its most personal designs, and that's a pretty good way of looking at it. This is a guitar that was designed around what Paul actually likes to play rather than simply checking the usual boxes for a modern electric.

The combination of a maple-topped mahogany body, set mahogany neck, rosewood fingerboard, and Wide Fat neck profile gives the SE Paul's Guitar a very familiar PRS foundation. The 25" scale sits right between the traditional Gibson and Fender worlds, while the 10" radius and 22-fret layout make for an extremely comfortable playing platform. And, as you'd expect from PRS, the fit, finish, fretwork, and overall ergonomics make this guitar feel considerably more expensive than the SE badge might suggest.

Then we get to the good stuff. The TCI “S” treble and bass pickups are designed to deliver a vintage-inspired humbucker sound with plenty of clarity and musical response, but the two mini-toggle switches let you independently split either pickup. That means you can run both humbuckers, either pickup by itself, or start mixing humbucker and single-coil modes to create a total of eight pickup combinations. It's a genuinely clever system. You get the authority and fullness of humbuckers when you want it, then flip a switch and suddenly there's a much leaner, more immediate single-coil character available.

The bridge is another detail that separates this from a generic import solidbody. PRS uses its stoptail design with brass inserts and brass studs, the same basic bridge concept specified on the Core Paul's Guitar. It's a simple, elegant setup that contributes to the guitar's sustain, resonance, and tuning stability while keeping the body uncluttered. Add PRS's current wing-button tuners and you've got a guitar that's exceptionally easy to live with.

And that Teal Black finish is just icing on the cake. It's classy enough to look at home in a traditional guitar collection, but distinctive enough that it doesn't disappear into a wall of sunbursts and black guitars. More importantly, this is one of those PRS models where the feature set actually serves the player. Paul's Guitar gives you a tremendous amount of tonal ground to cover without losing the straightforward feel of a great two-pickup solidbody.

If you want one guitar that can move comfortably between humbucker punch, cleaner single-coil textures, and everything in between, the SE Paul's Guitar is a pretty tough instrument to overlook. It's unmistakably PRS, unmistakably Paul's design, and an awful lot of guitar for the money.
