This Gibson Custom Shop Murphy Lab 1957 Les Paul Custom Ultra Light Aged Ebony weighs 9 lbs 12 oz. Some guitars have a lot going for them and this is one of them! The Custom is a timeless, legendary guitar and there just is no better version than those that visit the Murphy Lab. This one is aged to an Ultra-Light level so the distressing is tasteful and never overwhelming. 

A solid, 1 piece mahogany body starts the recipe right. Not just the back, mind you, but the top as well. This is a difficult body to build that requires a big chunk of mahogany to start with. The end result is what many refer to as The Black Beauty Les Paul. Only the 1957 Les Paul Custom comes with this special Mahogany Only body. A proper Les Paul Custom is not weight-relieved so they tend to be heavy. However, this one weighs in at 9 lbs 12 oz, a very nice weight for a Custom, indeed! 

The neck is carved from a single piece of mahogany into what Gibson refers to as their Chunky C Shape. A solid, 1 piece Ebony Fingerboard is jet black and looks killer, especially with the Mother of Pearl Block Inlays. The pieces of MOP selected look an inch deep! Classic Gibson appointments like 1.69" nut width and 24.75" scale width provide a familiar playing experience. Other mentionables include nylon nut material, 22 Historic Medium Jumbo Frets, and Kluson Waffleback Tuners with Pearloid Tuner Keys. 

The pickups are a pair of Custombucker Alico 3 Humbuckers that are unpotted. Wax Dipped (or Potted) pickups do a better job at eliminating microphonics and feedback. However, it is at the expense of some top-end fidelity and added compression. Unpotted pickups seem to convey more information than unpotted pickups, and offer a tone with more breathability and detail. Each pickup has its own volume and tone control. A 3-way pickup toggle switch grants access to each pickup alone or in tandem.
